“Getting the Poison Out”

It’s one of my favorite quotes from one of my favorite fictional characters, Hank Moody, played by David Dochuvny on the hit Showtime series Californication. I’m sure that’s not where the quote originated but its meaning is all the same: ejecting toxic materials, whether they be physical or metaphorical, from the self to clear the mind, cheat death, and ward off insanity. I suppose that’s how writers stay sane and exactly what I was doing in my last post. I got the poison out, healthily and indirectly…

You see, for a long time … Keep reading…

Confessing to Murder

I dream of killing you, my hands entwined around your pale throat, veins bulging from your face like writhing worms, blood vessels bursting lightning strikes across the whites of your eyes as the last breath escapes your cold lips. You are the inheritor of my vengeance, the murderer of my innocence, the keeper of the key to my prison of rage. Fury flows like fire through my veins at the faintest whisper of your name just as a spell from a wizard’s lips ignites the æther into being.

You’ll never know the sting of an empty home, the … Keep reading…

In Sickness And In Health

pukingmanThe past few days have been the worst. Seriously. I work nightshift so Wednesday morning after the gym I finally made it to bed about ten o’ clock. Five hours later, I awoke with this odd ache all over my body. The fever hadn’t set in yet nor the nausea. I did what I normally do. I had some breakfast thinking that would help to ease my pain. Maybe I was just sore from my workout, right? Wrong!

Six hours later, I had a full blown fever and … Keep reading…

Determining Villainy

legionWhat makes a villain a villain? Do they have to throw kittens from a balcony? Does a villain have to be a loner vampire type or command an army of undead? Do they need to stand in the way of two star crossed lovers or simply have opinions that oppose oneself or a predetermined hero? The latest episode of Supernatural has brought me to this question along with some personal experiences. I decided to do some research to get a more accurate answer. I started by … Keep reading…

Character Names

Careful

Due to some of my daily experiences (A.K.A. life), it occurred to me that I should probably keep a list of character names, good and bad, that I associate with certain archetypes. For instance, ‘Ragan’ wouldn’t necessarily be a name for a bad guy or evil doer, but I would definitely lump it in with arrogant asshole (I apologize to bearers of the name who are not assholes, but my experiences have given me a different perspective of the title). Keep an eye on this post … Keep reading…

Learning My Calling

I’ve recently been drafting my outline for “Lost State of the Union” and it is so absolutely wonderful that I don’t think I could bare breaking it down into roughly 10-15 pieces of flash fiction. I apologize if anyone was looking forward to this series of short stories, but I believe justice is better served in its entirety instead of small pieces. On the brighter side, school is coming along very well, and I’m only a few months away from obtaining my bachelors. Yay!

This month I’m taking a class on storyboarding, animation, and comic writing. It’s really exciting and I get to … Keep reading…
